Wednesday Season 1: Review

After discovering them in the school pool, Wednesday drops two bags of red-bellied piranhas into the water. She then observes the piranhas attack the guys in the water with pure fascination and joy.

Her mother, Morticia, insists that they enroll her in the new school because her classmates will be able to relate to her there. A truly magical location. Additionally, due to what Wednesday did to the bullies at her former school, she nearly faced charges of attempted murder.

They soon arrive at Nevermore, where Larissa, the principal, greets them. She is Morticia’s former roommate. It turns out. Because of Wednesday’s perfect grades and the family’s long association with the school, she is sufficiently impressed to set an expectation and accept her in the middle of the term. Morticia informs the principal that Wednesday is required by the court to attend therapy because she is worried about her mental health. Larissa claims they can meet twice a week on Wednesday with a licensed therapist.

The principal assigns Wednesday to her mother’s old dorm, Ophelia Hall, and takes them to meet Wednesday’s new roommate. Enid Sinclair is a bubbly girl and is excited to meet her new roommate and take her on a school tour. Wednesday is not interested in learning much about the place as she has no plans of staying long in the school.

Enid quickly brings up the rumors about Wednesday’s brush with the law in her former school. Of course, Wednesday calmly confirms the stories to be true. Enid still shows Wednesday around and tells her about the school’s social cliques, which are divided into four, namely: fangs, furs, stones, and scales.

The family bids Wednesday goodbye, and Morticia warns her about planning to escape the school. Wednesday believes her mom underestimates her and vows to leave the educational prison in which they have enrolled her. Her mother tells her that she is brilliant, but she sometimes gets in her way. She leaves her a little parting gift, a pendant made of obsidian, and a crystal ball to contact her on. Her dad leaves her another gift, a piece of a hand, to secretly watch over her.

Wednesday Season 1: Trailer

Yes, the first full-length trailer has landed, giving us a glimpse of Tim Burton’s take on the Addams family.

Meanwhile, a new clip was released as part of Netflix’s global TUDUM event in September 2022, teasing an interaction between Wednesday and Thing. You can check it out below:

Wednesday Season 1: Plot

We’ll see the titular character coming to terms with her physical abilities, attempting to thwart a monstrous killing spree that’s terrorized the local school, and solving a supernatural mystery that has impacted her family for decades on Wednesday.

The official Netflix summary reads: “A sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday’s years as a student at the peculiar Nevermore Academy.” The team behind the popular Superman prequel Smallville, Al Gough and Miles Millar, wrote the show and will depict Wednesday as “the ultimate lone wolf.”

Wednesday will be released on November 23 on Netflix. Sign up for Netflix for £6.99 a month. Netflix is also available on Sky Glass and Virgin Media Stream.

Wednesday Addams has graduated from a precociously gloomy child to a full-on moody teen, and she has her own Netflix show to mark the occasion. I am excited to move just a few blocks from one haunted Westfield home to another. (Exciting Jersey trivia: The creator of the Addams family was from Westfield, and the house that inspired the Addams family’s gothic mansion is a five-minute drive from the Watcher house.) Among the many inexplicable business decisions made over at Netflix HQ — the cancellation of The Baby-Sitters Club AND Teenage Bounty Hunters … unforgivable! — the call to release Wednesday about three weeks after Halloween rather than in the spooky season lead-up is incredibly mysterious. But let’s not let these baffling scheduling choices stand between us and our new series.

When we meet Wednesday, she is attending Nancy Reagan High School (lol), but not for long! (Readers in my extended recap universe probably recognize our star, Jenna Ortega, as the balcony sprite from season two of You.) When letter-jacket-wearing pricks bully Wednesday’s brother Pugsley by tying him up, gagging him, and shoving him in his sister’s locker — a violent and retro method of harassment — she avenges him. Wednesday’s introduction of piranhas into the pool cuts their swim practice short. Threatened with attempted-murder charges from the boy who lost a testicle, Wednesday is expelled — her eighth school in five years. Impressive commitment to the bit!

Wednesday Season 1: Fun Fact

She’s recently been plagued by visions and an inheritance from her mother. She is dealing with them finely and productively (by ignoring them/pretending they aren’t happening.) She is also tormented by the vision literally in front of her: the sight of her parents, Gomez (Luis Guzman) and Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), making out in the backseat as their driver, Lurch, schleps the family to Nevermore, her parent’s alma mater and Wednesday’s last hope for an education.

It’s hard to buy here because it took so long for Wednesday’s parents to ship her to Nevermore. Why didn’t they send her there in the first place? And why is Wednesday so adamant about not going? I get that her whole thing is that she refuses to be like her parents — even though, I mean, her mom is a smoke show who is madly in love and seems to be living her best life! Sure, teens are going to teen, and nobody says you have to join the seance society even though it sounds enjoyable.

Dickinson-esque — but does she think there’s some other school out there that would be better suited to her temperament and abilities? Wouldn’t she instead run around with a bunch of vampires, werewolves, and assorted power-goths than the civilians she’s been stuck with to date? If her big dream is not to be, as she accuses her mother of being, a “housewife,” doesn’t she think she ought to finish 12th grade?

A coming-of-age supernatural mystery comedy focusing on Wednesday Addams and her years as a high school student at Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her psychic powers, stop a monstrous killing spree of the town citizens, and solve the supernatural mystery that affects her family 25 years ago — all while navigating her new relationships.
